The Evolution of Java
Interviews with Mike Milinkovich and Bill Roth
by Joe Winchester
(June 29, 2007) - Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, has been kind enough to answer some questions for Java Developer's Journal. Rather than rattle off the usual ones about the name, about why Swing wasn't used, or how much influence IBM still has, Mike has fielded questions on some more current and topical subjects, as well as given us his insights onto the future. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Mike.

Hal Stern Outlines Future of Virtualization
"I Am Sitting at the Conference Listening"
by John Whaley
(June 29, 2007) - He identified some of the challenges that people and organizations are facing and will face in the move to this new model, including security and trust, issues with managing growing data centers, and long-term information sustainability. He also identified the fact that increasingly so, consumers are becoming creators. Just look at Wikipedia, Youtube, MySpace, etc. All of these are based completely on the content generated by its users.
What if I Actually Like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript?
"It's Downright Pleasant!"
by David Heinemeier Hansson
(June 29, 2007) - I actually find the development experience between a modern web-application framework, Firebug, and current JavaScript libraries more than just bearable, I find it downright pleasant. Even more so because it's born out of the pragmatism of not needing to be perfect. It has evolved over a decade of experimentation. On the user experience side of things, we're not even close to tapping out the potential of HTML. The majority of web sites and applications still suck. And if most developers and designers can't make a clean run with the training wheels and constricted playground of HTML, then we probably are in no rush to start playing with a Ducatti on the Autobahn.
Model-Based Testing for Java Apps
A Supplement to Automated Testing
by Bill Hayduk
(June 29, 2007) - Software testing - whether it's automated, manual, or model-based - is a systemic method of discovering variances between how a program was expected to perform and how it actually behaves in use. Every application should be tested to ensure it is both usable and functional - that it doesn't contain bugs or flaws.
SOA, RIA and the Human Factor
SOA from the Ground Up and Top Down
by Yakov Fain
(June 29, 2007) - While delivering a talk on SOA I've asked the audience the following question, 'What do you think is the driving force for implementing any technology or architecture in a decent size Enterprise?' The answers were typical: better code re-usability, accessibility? But I was looking for a different answer that has nothing to with technical merits of any technology...
